Penticton, BC, November 3, 2015 –Gateway Casinos & Entertainment and their Lake City Casino property in Penticton has joined together with Locolanding Adventure Park to collect new unwrapped gifts for children in need in the South Okanagan. This year marks the first annual Community Toy Drive, presented by Gateway Casinos and Locolanding.
Join us on November 26 from 6am to 9am at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre. Make a difference in a child or teen’s life simply by bringing a new unwrapped toy. While you are there enjoy a delicious complimentary hot breakfast, get into the spirit of the season by having your photo taken with Santa and enjoy sounds of the holidays courtesy of two local children’s choirs.
This event came from hearing of a need for thousands of gift donations and the desire of two local organizations to help. “The thought of a child or teen not having a present under their tree is heartbreaking,” said Diana Stirling owner of LocoLanding Adventure Park. It was at this time that LocoLanding and Gateway joined forces to fill the community need of ensuring all children in the South Okanagan will wake up with a gift on Christmas day.
“There wasn’t even a ‘Should we do this?’ moment. It was how we make it happen” says Jerry Pokorny, Executive General Manager for Lake City Casinos. “With the holidays quickly approaching it was imperative that this event happens. The community has been amazing and has rallied to make sure it could.”
Over 1500 children in the South Okanagan will benefit from the GatewayGives & LocoLanding Community Toy Drive. The toys will be distributed through 16 organizations including: the Salvation Army, South Okanagan Women in Need Transition House, Dragonfly Pond Family Respite Society, Penticton & District Community Resources, Ministry of Children & Families, Ooknakane Friendship
Centre, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Penticton & District Society for Community Living, Church of the Nazarene, Penticton Secondary School, Princess Margaret Secondary School, Christopher Housing Society and the Community Action Program Lower Similkameen.
“I believe most of us have felt immense disappointment and hurt in our life so we can imagine what it must feel like when a child wakes up to not one toy under the tree or in many cases no tree, nor a turkey or festive holiday dinner. There is so much focus on Christmas and the holiday spirit with the music everywhere, store windows made up, the halls of schools decorated and of course in the classrooms. This is not the reality for many in our community.” said Debbie Scarborough Executive Director SOWINS. “I’m deeply touched that Gateway Casinos and LocoLanding have stepped up to make a few wishes come true.”
The first annual GatewayGives & Locolanding Community Toy Drive will be a true community event. Volunteers will be on hand to accept the new unwrapped toys brought in by the community and local businesses. ShawTV Go! Okanagan will be filming live on location and Country 100.7 will be broadcasting their popular morning show live throughout the morning.
We are asking for your help in collecting toys for kids of all ages including teenagers. Any local businesses that would like to have a donation stocking to fill please contact Lauren at Lake City Casino at (250)487-1280 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
