This morning, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited CEO, Tony Santo and Cascades Casino General Manager, Robert Case presented Tim Larose of the Canadian Red Cross with a cheque for $10,000. This donation is in addition to the almost 10,000 meals Cascades Casino has donated to BC Wildfire evacuees. A campaign that began immediately following the first evacuation order on July 7th and continued until the Province-wide State of Emergency was lifted on September 15th.
On the evening of July 7th we heard that Cache Creek and Ashcroft were being evacuated to Kamloops. We immediately got in contact with the organizers at the evacuation centre and let them know that Cascades Casino would be offering 1 free meal per day, per person at the Buffet restaurant to anyone displaced by the Wildfire. Gateway’s communications team alerted all the local media to get the word out as quickly as possible and the entire Gateway family of properties began sharing this on social media. The following morning we began seeing those displaced in the Buffet.
“We thought this would be a campaign that would be needed for a little while and then everyone would be able to go back home. Sadly, the situation got worse instead of better and we knew we must continue for as long as people were out of their homes and in need.”
As more and more communities were evacuated throughout the province Cascade’s sister property in Penticton also began to offer the same assistance to the evacuees being sent there.
Gateway staff and customers from across the country have also stepped up to raise funds for the BC Wildfire relief. Staff from as far as Point Edward, Ontario donated to the Canadian Red Cross BC Wildfire relief fund during a staff fundraiser. Our customers have been very generous as well. Spearheaded by the two Vancouver Island locations they ran a customer campaign that brought in over $1,000 that was donated to the BC Wildfire relief.
Throughout this campaign we have had the privilege to get to know these folks and learn their story and hopefully bring a sense of family to an otherwise terrible time in their lives. There have been tears and laughs and more than a few teddy bears handed out.
Today, we are proud to say we have served close to 10,000 buffets, that`s almost $175,000 is meals to those displaced. Also, through GatewayGIVES, our charitable and community engagement program we have made a $10,000 cash donation to the Canadian Red Cross to further help those devastated by this season`s wildfires.
